5-Axle Sets

A 3- or 4-axle base truck can be converted into a 5-axle one by adding an electro-hydraulically or mechanically steered 2nd front axle behind the front axle. Similarly, an electro-hydraulically steered additional axle can be added at the rear, in front of or behind the drive axle.

There are two basic versions of 5-axle trucks: axles 1, 2 and 3 are steering, or axles 1, 2 and 5 are steering.

The additional axle set is usually air-suspended and lift-able. The maximum axle loads of the additional axle are between 10 and 13 tonnes depending on the configuration.
